As the Empire tightened its grip across the galaxy, resistance movements arose on numerous worlds. Often local, these groups aimed to free an individual planet or star system from Imperial rule. Such groups often ran afoul of the Empire’s intelligence agents, Inquisitors and enforcers, which dealt ruthlessly with any sign of larger-scale rebellion.
In addition to these local resistance groups, a number of larger rebel forces have been organized around specific campaigns or areas of conflict. These organizations provide the resources, equipment and manpower necessary to launch more concentrated attacks against the Empire in shorter timeframes. They also offer greater coordination between multiple rebel groups.
Among the most well-known of these organizations is the Alliance to Restore the Republic, better known as the Rebel Alliance. This organization was featured in the original trilogy of Star Wars films – A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). Its members were shown to be both ruthless and compassionate, as they prioritized the safety of civilians while simultaneously attacking all targets regardless of rank or authority.
The Alliance also established a career system for its members. This included positions such as k-9, combat medical specialist, faction analyst and geographist, ambassador, recruiter, drill instructor and photographer. These careers were available to those willing to meet certain requirements, and allowed the Alliance to build a diversified group of skilled members who would assist with both the administrative side of the organization and its operations on the ground.
